$1.2m Titans superstar inks fresh NRL deal

Titans superstar David Fifita has rejected rival clubs and re-signed with Gold Coast for another three seasons.

The 23-year-old back-rower was uncontracted beyond 2023 but is now tied to the Titans until the end of 2026, having most notably knocked back a pursuit by the Broncos.

Fifita began his NRL career at the Broncos, before joining the Titans ahead of the 2021 season on a deal reportedly worth $1.2 million per year.

“To have David commit to the Titans shows he believes in what we are building and it gives us great confidence as a club,” said Titans coach Justin Holbrook.

“As coach, I’ve seen David’s commitment first-hand and that started weeks ago preparing for this season, working hard to be fit to perform at his best.

“We saw that in our first-round win over the Tigers, with the work David has put in on full show.

“We have a core group of young guys committed to making our community proud here on the Coast and David is a big part of that.

“I’m excited David’s decided he wants to be a Titan (in the) long term and I’m excited to work with him as we all look to bring success to our region over the next few years.”

If it’s not Wests Tigers halfback Luke Brooks, Fifita is the most scrutinised player in the NRL.

Inconsistency in Titans colours led to Queensland State of Origin coach Billy Slater overlooking the enigma for selection in 2022.

He drifted in and out of games, his work rate in defence drew question marks and he only bagged seven tries — a dip from 17 four-pointers in 2021.

Fifita has also started a clump of games on the bench at the Titans.

But he began his 2023 campaign on a promising note, racking up 206 metres as the Titans trumped Wests Tigers 22-10 at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday.
