12 terrible free transfers that didn’t live up to their billing

A reminder to clubs everywhere that just because something’s free, it doesn’t always make it good value. Especially when you consider the cost of wages and the fact that often, clubs don’t even make a profit on a player who only signs on a short-term contract, anyway.

Sometimes, it’s better to actually part with money for a player – as this list definitely proves…

Having previously represented Ajax, Milan and Barcelona, as well as pulling on a Holland shirt 20 times, Bogarde’s free transfer to Chelsea initially had Blues excited.
