Ex-convict, 3 others arrested over UK-bound cocaine consignment in liquid starch sachets

On December 28, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) announced the re-arrest of Nwobodo Chidiebere Basil, a well-known drug trafficker. Basil had previously been convicted in 2023 for trafficking 30.10 kg of methamphetamine, having hidden it in powdered custard containers intended for London. He received a five-year prison sentence or a fine of seven million Naira, which he paid, allowing him to return to illicit activities shortly thereafter.

The latest arrest occurred on December 20, 2025, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos. NDLEA operatives seized 75 parcels of cocaine, weighing 1.50 kilograms, concealed within factory-sealed sachets of cold-water starch, which were also destined for the UK. Three cargo agents—Jubrin Firdausi Hassana, Kuku Daniel Oluwasegun, and Igwe Chioma Jane—were apprehended in connection with this attempt to export illegal drugs.

Following the initial arrests, investigations led to Basil, identified as the mastermind behind the operation. He was located and arrested on December 21 at a popular relaxation center in Ikeja while on a date with his girlfriend. This operation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating drug trafficking, particularly with individuals who repeatedly engage in such criminal behavior despite previous convictions.
