Three fun seekers drown during picnic in Benue river

On December 26, 2025, three men tragically drowned during a picnic at a river in Buruku Local Government Area, Benue State, resulting in widespread mourning within the community. The victims were part of a leisure group visiting the river, known for its dangerous currents.

During recovery operations conducted on Saturday, the bodies of the three men were retrieved from the water. One identified victim was Msughter Felixe Terwase from Mkar, Gboko. Eyewitness reports and social media photos depicted emergency responders, ambulances, and a crowd of onlookers at the riverbank amid search efforts.

The Buruku River is infamous for its strong currents and has seen multiple drowning incidents over the years, particularly during festive periods like the Boxing Day picnic. This latest tragedy underscores the ongoing dangers associated with the river, prompting calls for increased safety awareness in the area.
