2027: Atiku can anoint Peter Obi to win for ADC - Yunusa Tanko

Yunusa Tanko Yakasai, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, recently suggested that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar could support Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in securing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket for the 2027 general election. Yakasai made these statements during an appearance on TVC’s “Politics On Sunday” as discussions surrounding the ADC’s presidential ticket intensify.
When questioned about the implications if Atiku were to obstruct Obi from obtaining the ADC nomination, Yakasai rejected the notion, characterizing Atiku as a “leader” and “father” figure. He emphasized that Atiku possesses the authority to contest for the presidency but could also choose to endorse another candidate if it ultimately boosts the party’s electoral prospects.
Yakasai articulated that the essence of winning doesn’t necessarily require being the candidate oneself; rather, it can involve supporting a capable individual to secure victory. This perspective highlights a strategic approach to political alliances and the belief that prioritizing party success over individual ambition is crucial.
Amid these discussions, there is an ongoing call from Obi’s supporters for ADC leadership to formally name him as their candidate for the upcoming election. This request underscores the increasing urgency among opposition factions regarding leadership decisions in the context of the forthcoming polls.
In a related development, the ADC has issued a warning to its members and supporters against engaging in rhetoric that could create divisions within the party. Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, articulated this caution during a live conversation on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He emphasized the importance of unity and urged supporters to refrain from divisive narratives as the party prepares for its primary elections scheduled for June.
Overall, Tanko Yakasai’s comments reflect a broader dialogue regarding political strategy within Nigeria’s opposition parties, focusing on collaboration and the potential for significant endorsements that could shape the outcomes of future elections.
