2027: Resign now if you want to contest – Niger Govt orders political appointees

Niger State Government Issues Resignation Deadline for Political Appointees
The Niger State Government has announced that all political appointees and public office holders who plan to contest in the 2027 general elections must resign their positions by March 23, 2026.
This directive, issued by Secretary to the Government of Niger State, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, follows the Independent National Electoral Commission’s release of the revised electoral timetable for the upcoming elections. According to the timetable, presidential and National Assembly elections are set for January 16, 2027, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will occur on February 6, 2027.
Political parties are slated to commence their primaries on April 23, 2026. Usman emphasized that this directive ensures compliance with electoral laws, which mandate that public office holders resign at least one month prior to party primaries if they wish to run for elective positions.
He urged all affected officials to submit their resignations by the March 23 deadline to align with the electoral guidelines. “I want to remind all Political Appointees and Government Officials who wish to contest for elective positions that party primaries are set to start on April 23, 2026,” Usman stated. “In light of this, all such individuals are advised to resign their appointments by March 23, 2026, to fulfill the one-month requirement before seeking elective positions.”
Usman reaffirmed the Niger State Government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all political activities adhere strictly to constitutional and electoral provisions.
