2027: Why Nigerian workers want Tinubu re-elected – Akporeha

NUPENG President Supports Tinubu’s Re-election Efforts

Prince Williams Akporeha, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), expressed strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in the upcoming 2027 general election. He emphasized that Nigerian workers want the president to complete the economic reforms initiated under his administration.

Speaking at an event in Abuja on Friday, Akporeha highlighted that recent economic measures, including the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the Naira, while initially challenging, have begun to show positive outcomes for many Nigerians.

“I call on all Nigerians who believe in progress, stability, and national development to join this movement for Nigeria to continue on the path of reform, growth, and opportunity,” said Akporeha, who also serves as the coordinator of Working People United. He noted that this appeal echoes the collective sentiments of a wide array of Nigerians, including workers, artisans, traders, farmers, professionals, transporters, and other industrious citizens who constitute the backbone of the nation’s economy.

Support for Akporeha’s stance was echoed by leaders from various industry associations, including Billy Gillis-Harry of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, Chinedu Ukadike from the Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria, and Zino Onaemor of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria.

In contrast, the opposition within the African Democratic Congress has criticized Tinubu’s administration for what they describe as poor budget implementation and other economic challenges affecting Nigerians.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria’s inflation rate fell to 15.10 percent in January 2026, with food inflation declining to 8.89 percent. Despite this disinflation, many Nigerians continue to face high living costs.
