22-year-old Plateau student shot dead in South Africa

Nigerian Student Shot Dead in South Africa Amid Concerns of Xenophobic Violence

A 22-year-old Nigerian student, Isaac Satlat, from Plateau State, has reportedly been shot and killed in South Africa. This incident has raised alarms among Nigerian expatriates, who suspect it may be part of a resurgence of xenophobic attacks targeting foreigners, particularly Nigerians.

Charles Awuzie, a Nigerian resident in South Africa, shared the news on Facebook on Thursday, revealing that Isaac, whose father is a Christian missionary in the country, had been kidnapped while driving his father’s vehicle in Moshongo Province, near Pretoria. Two days later, his body was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds.

Isaac was set to graduate next month and had planned to relocate to Canada to further his studies. His murder follows the recent killing of another Nigerian, Emeka Uzor, who was shot during an anti-drug operation in Gauteng, a suburb of Johannesburg.

In a separate social media post, Awuzie expressed the tragic circumstances surrounding Isaac’s death, stating that the young man had been abducted from his car and shot multiple times. He described Isaac’s body as found in Attridgeville, close to Pretoria, and indicated that the family is devastated. Reports suggest that Isaac’s father has been hospitalized in Nigeria due to the stress of the situation, with his blood pressure reportedly reaching alarming levels upon hearing the news.

Isaac’s murder is part of a disturbing trend, prompting concerns from the Nigerian community regarding the safety of foreigners in South Africa.
