The spokesman of the State Police Command, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, September 30, said the driver identified as Usman Idris lost control and rammed into the gathering.
“A fatal motor vehicle and pedestrian accident occurred on Sunday along Kano-Gumel road at Gagarawa village in Ringim LGA,” the statement read.
“The accident occurred when one Usman Idris of Doko village, Garki LGA, was driving a Volkswagon Sharon with registration number Kano NSR 452 ZX from Gashuwa Local Government Area in Yobe state to Kano State.
“On reaching the said Gagarawa village, the driver lost control while at speed and knocked down about fifteen (15) pedestrians, who were celebrating maulud
“Upon receipt of the pitiful report, the team of policemen were rushed to the scene and ferried the victims to Ringim General Hospital.
“Regretfully, on their arrival, the medical doctor on call was confirmed and certified six (6) among the victims namely; 1. Suleiman Hambali ‘m’ age 15yrs of Karshi village, 2. Buhari Isyaku ‘m’ age 15yrs of Jiyau village, 3. Abba Yusuf ‘m’ age 15yrs, 4. Yusuf Usman ‘m’ age 15yrs, 5. Gaddafi Isah ‘m’ age 13yrs, 6. Ibrahim Tsalha ‘m’ age 17yrs all of Gagarawa village, Ringim LGA dead.
“A post-mortem examination was conducted and the corpses were released to their relatives for burial.
“Meanwhile, the other nine (9) victims were treated and admitted. They were responding to the therapy.
“Both the driver and the vehicle were taken into police custody to prevent a breakdown and restore order in the area.
“The Jigawa state Commissioner of Police, CP AT Abdullahi psc, expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and relatives and prayed for their gentle souls to rest in perfect peace.
“He therefore directed the motor traffic department (MTD) to conduct a discreet investigation and report their findings immediately.”
