Governor Okpebholo suspends revenue collection in Edo

Newly inaugurated Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has issued an immediate and indefinite suspension on all revenue collection across the state, particularly in motor parks and similar areas. The directive, which aims to address ongoing concerns around revenue processes, will remain in place until further notice.

The announcement was made through a statement by Hon. Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, who also emphasized that the state’s Commissioner of Police has been directed to enforce the order. “Anyone seen collecting revenues on behalf of the State Government will be arrested,” the statement read.

Okpebholo, who was sworn in on Tuesday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, has indicated that he intends to review the current issues surrounding revenue collection and will announce a new course of action shortly. He urged all parties to comply, stating, “The Governor will soon address the issues and concerns raised. He will issue new directives soon. Until then, no one is authorised to collect revenues on behalf of the State Government.”

Governor Okpebholo’s swearing-in marks the end of Godwin Obaseki’s eight-year tenure. Taking the oath alongside his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, Okpebholo pledged to prioritize transparency and public interest in his administration, drawing applause from supporters who gathered for the occasion.
