Lagos assures smooth traffic as 64-day rehabilitation begins on Lekki-Epe Expressway

The Lagos State Government has emphasized its commitment to ensuring smooth traffic flow and public safety as rehabilitation work begins on the 20-kilometre Lekki-Epe Expressway, a project projected to last for 64 days. Mr. Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, conveyed these assurances during a press briefing, highlighting that well-coordinated traffic management strategies are being implemented to minimize disruption for motorists and road users.
Giwa specified that the rehabilitation will not necessitate a complete shutdown of the expressway. Instead, targeted traffic control measures will be enforced at critical junctions and hotspots to facilitate steady vehicular movement throughout the construction period. The traffic management efforts will be executed in phases, involving the deployment of over 305 personnel from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to augment the existing traffic management zones along the Lekki-Epe route.
He emphasized that the increase in personnel aims to ensure free traffic flow, rapid incident response, and strict adherence to traffic regulations, thereby maintaining order and safety during the rehabilitation. The rising traffic volume on the Lekki-Epe corridor has been attributed to several major economic and infrastructural developments in the area, including the Lekki Deep Sea Port, Lekki Free Trade Zone, and Dangote Refinery, which have led to the growth of commercial and industrial centers.
To preemptively address potential gridlocks caused by emergencies, Giwa mentioned that a fleet of recovery vehicles, including high-, medium-, and low-capacity tow trucks, will be strategically positioned. This initiative aims to swiftly remove broken-down vehicles and mitigate secondary traffic congestion. Additionally, LASTMA plans to utilize drone technology for real-time aerial monitoring, allowing for quick detection and resolution of traffic incidents not only on the expressway but also on other critical routes throughout Lagos.
In terms of support for motorists, the traffic management framework will include the installation of clear directional signage, improved lighting, and other necessary safety features throughout the construction zone. Giwa also informed that operatives from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) brigade will be mobilized to reinforce LASTMA’s efforts, heightening security and safeguarding lives and property along the corridor.
Motorists have been encouraged to consider alternative routes to alleviate congestion around the construction zone, with the Coaster Road—linking Ogombo through Abraham Adesanya—highlighted as a feasible option during the rehabilitation period. Giwa urged road users to exercise patience, adhere to traffic rules, and cooperate fully with traffic officers, emphasizing that collective discipline and understanding are essential for the project’s smooth execution.
Residents have also been encouraged to report traffic incidents via LASTMA’s toll-free hotline, 080000527862, with assurances of prompt and professional assistance. The state government has appealed for public understanding and cooperation, underscoring that the rehabilitation is a crucial intervention aimed at enhancing mobility, improving road safety, and supporting sustainable economic growth in Lagos.
