2027: Makinde rejects religion in successor decision-making process

Oyo Governor Emphasizes Competence Over Religious Considerations in Succession

By Adeola Badru

IBADAN — Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde reaffirmed his commitment to prioritizing competence and governance continuity over religious factors in the selection of his successor for the upcoming 2027 governorship election. His comments came during a farewell event for 1,036 intending pilgrims departing for the 2026 Hajj at the Oyo State Hajj Camp in Olodo, Ibadan.

Addressing growing speculation about the religious identity of his potential successor, Makinde asserted, “I have told those talking about Muslim candidature that we should not be stampeded into taking decisions on the basis of religion and I know they understand me.”

The governor emphasized that religion has historically not served as a divisive element in Oyo State. “In Oyo State, religion is not an issue,” he stated, highlighting the peaceful coexistence of various faiths within families across the region.

While acknowledging ongoing discussions regarding his successor, Makinde insisted the main focus should remain on maintaining the accomplishments of his administration. He called on citizens to pray for the selection of a leader capable of sustaining those achievements.

“There is a lot of discussion going on right now on the choice of who would become the next governor,” he remarked. “What matters most is that we must stay united. The progress of Oyo State is what is important to us, and I believe God will answer our prayers.”

In his appeal for unity, Makinde asserted that Oyo State would resist any attempts to foster division along religious lines. He encouraged the departing pilgrims to pray for the state and nation during their pilgrimage, especially as the election approaches.

“Whatever decision we make, we will have to live with it for the next four years,” he warned.

In addition to urging pilgrims to seek divine guidance, Makinde announced several initiatives to support their journey, including the donation of a new bus for transport in Saudi Arabia and another for the Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board.

Earlier, Wahab Atere, Chairman of the Pilgrims Welfare Board, confirmed that all logistics for the 1,036 intending pilgrims have been secured and airlifting is scheduled to commence on May 3, 2026.

Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal and former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Monsurat Sunmonu, praised Makinde for his ongoing support of the Muslim community, encouraging the pilgrims to maintain focus and dedication throughout their journey.
