‘Broken’ Carlton exposed by damning vision

Matthew Lloyd was so scathing of Carlton defender Nic Newman on Monday night that, while dissecting vision of him from the weekend, the Essendon legend admitted to thinking he’d pulled a hamstring.

On Nine’s Footy Classified, Lloyd pored over footage from Carlton’s 26-point defeat to Brisbane, including a contest between Newman and Charlie Cameron deep in the Lions’ forward 50.

“This one really got me,” Lloyd said.

“Watch this effort from Nic Newman, when you thought this is a broken team. Watch it down the ground, his effort. I thought he must have torn a hamstring here, Nic Newman. Watch his reaction after having a goal kicked on him; that was a player who lost spirit there for that moment and that’s the lack of connection which is hurting Vossy (Carlton coach Michael Voss) and Carlton.”

Not only did Cameron appear to outmuscle Newman with ease, the Carlton backman gave up on the contest as soon as he was beaten.

The ball soared over the top of Cameron and Newman, bounced at the top of the goal square and was mopped up by the All-Australian forward, who booted a simple major.

Carlton has lost three of its last four games, going down to Adelaide, St Kilda and Brisbane.

The Blues are placed eighth on the ladder ahead of round nine as they aim to qualify for the finals for the first time since 2013.

Carlton led Collingwood by 25 points in its last home-and-away game of the 2022 season, and needed to defeat or draw with the Magpies to nab eighth on the ladder, but crumbled late in another torturous moment for its supporters.
