Nigerian detained while attempting to illegally enter Bangladesh from India

The Border Security Force (BSF) personnel has detained a 34-year-old Nigerian man in Tripura, India for illegal border crossing. 

 

A BSF spokesperson who disclosed this on Monday, December 9, 2024, said following specific intelligence, a checkpoint was established at Kaiyedhepa in Sepahijala district, leading to the arrest of the Nigerian national named Maxwell Nweke. 

 

Maxwell was observed acting suspiciously along the India-Bangladesh border road attempting to cross into Bangladesh from India.

 

Using information received from the Nigerian, BSF troops also apprehended an Indian tout, Suraj Prasad, from Amtali in West Tripura, who was trying to flee the scene on a motorcycle.

 

Prasad is recognized as a notorious tout, and the BSF has been actively pursuing him, the spokesperson stated.

 

The spokesperson highlighted that the BSF has ramped up its surveillance and operations along the 856 km India-Bangladesh border in Tripura to thwart infiltration, exfiltration, and cross-border crimes, including smuggling.

 

The Nigerian, Indian and other arrested foreigners were handed over to the police of the districts concerned for investigation after which they will be produced before courts.
