Lagos State University Student Dies Following Armed Robbery Attack

Lagos State University (LASU) has confirmed the death of Boluwatife Joseph Otabor, a student in the Department of History and International Studies, following injuries sustained during an armed robbery. Otabor died on June 2, 2026, after several days of medical treatment.

In a statement released on Thursday, the university’s Acting Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Mr. Olaniyi Jeariogbe, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, calling the incident tragic.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello extended condolences on behalf of the university community to Otabor’s family, friends, and colleagues.

The attack occurred off-campus in the Iba area on the night of May 29, 2026, when Otabor and several friends were reportedly confronted by armed robbers.

Following the attack, LASU activated support measures through the Office of the Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, and maintained communication with the Vice-Chancellor regarding the situation.

The university also liaised with medical personnel throughout Otabor’s hospitalization to monitor his condition.

After his death, university representatives visited with Otabor’s family and began discussions with officials from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and relevant law enforcement agencies.

LASU is collaborating with security forces to conduct a thorough investigation and to ensure that those responsible for the attack are apprehended and prosecuted.

In its statement, the university reiterated its sympathy for Otabor’s family, praying for strength as they cope with this loss. “The University condoles with the family and all who knew him and prays that the Almighty God grants them the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” the statement concluded.
