Kwara schools reopen as security situation improves

The Kwara State Government has announced the reopening of schools across the state due to a notable improvement in the security situation. The decision, communicated by Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, states that both public and private schools will resume academic activities on Monday, February 2, 2026. This move comes after an extensive review of the security measures currently being implemented in the region.

Since November 2025, several primary and secondary schools in Kwara South were closed as a precaution against insecurity, leaving many students at home while schools in other areas continued their academic calendars. The reopening decision aims to restore regular educational activities while ensuring that robust security measures are in place to safeguard students and staff.

Dr. Olohungbebe highlighted that the ongoing operations by security agencies have significantly mitigated threats from criminal elements, particularly in communities near educational facilities that were previously affected by violence and unrest. “The situation has improved considerably compared to what we experienced in the past, although we are not lowering our guard,” emphasized the commissioner, reflecting on the importance of remaining vigilant.

Security personnel have been strategically deployed around schools to build on the recent successes in combating banditry and other criminal activities that disrupted education in parts of the state. Alongside these efforts, the state government is emphasizing the importance of community involvement. They are working to strengthen community participation and promote early warning systems that can help maintain peace and security.

Overall, the Kwara State Government is focusing not only on immediate security concerns but also on fostering a collaborative approach between the community and law enforcement agencies to ensure the sustained safety of educational institutions. The restoration of normal academic activities is viewed as a crucial step toward reestablishing stability in the region, benefiting both students and the educational environment as a whole.
