Adopt play-based learning to strengthen basic education – Jigawa SUBEB urges teachers

Teachers Urged to Embrace Play-Based Learning in Jigawa State

JIGAWA, Nigeria — The Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has called on educators to implement play-based learning strategies as a means of enhancing children’s education and fostering a promising future.

The appeal was made by Professor Haruna Musa, chairman of SUBEB, during the 2026 International Day of Play celebration held Thursday at Kiyawa Special Primary School. This year’s theme, “Protect Play, Protect Childhood,” highlighted the significance of learning through play.

Malam Muhammad Ibrahim, who represented Professor Musa, emphasized that play-based learning is an effective method for imparting knowledge. He urged teachers and parents to encourage children to participate in playful activities rather than imposing excessive household responsibilities on them.

“Play encourages creativity, social skills, and problem-solving abilities, which are critical for children’s development,” Ibrahim stated.

UNICEF representative Malam Mukhtar Muhammad also addressed attendees, emphasizing that play is a fundamental right of every child rather than a luxury. He pointed out that denying children opportunities for play can lead to various social and developmental challenges.

“When children play, they become active and healthy while developing critical thinking and life skills that benefit both them and society in the long run,” Mukhtar noted. He reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to partnering with the Jigawa State Government to create additional play spaces, particularly in light of ongoing issues related to learning poverty.

The International Day of Play is celebrated worldwide to underscore play’s vital role in children’s physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development.

Children attending the event expressed their appreciation for the opportunity, urging parents and teachers to respect their rights to play.
