Tinubu sends state police amendment bill to Senate

Tinubu Proposes Constitutional Amendment for State Police

President Bola Tinubu has submitted a Constitution Alteration Bill to the National Assembly aimed at establishing state police across Nigeria.

The proposed legislation seeks to amend sections of the 1999 Constitution to provide a legal framework for state policing. This initiative aligns with Tinubu’s ongoing calls for constitutional reforms that would empower states to enhance security within their jurisdictions.

In February, the president urged the National Assembly to revise the Constitution to include provisions for state police. He emphasized that such reforms are vital for addressing critical security challenges, including terrorism and banditry.

During his nationwide address on Democracy Day, Tinubu reiterated his commitment to combating terrorism and violent crime, asserting that perpetrators and their sponsors would face strict legal consequences. He claimed that over 13,000 terrorists had been neutralized within the past year, expressing optimism that terrorism-related fatalities had decreased significantly compared to previous years.

The push for state police has gained traction in recent months, with members of both chambers of the National Assembly exploring constitutional amendments to decentralize policing authority to state governments.
