Social media virality undermining real talents – Singer YCee laments

Nigerian Rapper YCee Critiques Impact of Social Media on Music Industry
In a recent interview with Naija FM Lagos, Nigerian rapper and singer YCee expressed concerns about how social media platforms, particularly TikTok, are influencing the music industry. He argued that these platforms provide artists with unprecedented opportunities to gain visibility without the usual oversight of traditional music industry gatekeepers.
YCee noted that this trend has shifted the focus of record label executives, who are now more inclined to pursue artists known for their viral moments rather than those with genuine musical talent. He emphasized that the rise of social media has contributed to an influx of what he termed “half-baked musicians” and “accident artists,” resulting in a decline in the lyrical quality of the music landscape.
“Platforms like TikTok have made it easier for many to engage in music, allowing individuals who may not actually be artists to gain traction if a particular sound goes viral,” YCee said. “Unfortunately, music executives with the power and resources are now prioritizing virality over talent.”
