If you’ve been feeling like your home needs a more cozy welcoming aroma than a typical air freshener, look no further than your own kitchen for the perfect solution. A homemade stovetop potpourri.

What is a stovetop potpourri?

A stovetop potpourri, also known as a simmering potpourri or “pot,” is a mixture of aromatic spices, herbs, and essential oils that are heated on the stove and fills your home with a wonderful scent. Unlike artificial air fresheners, this recipe uses all-natural ingredients to create a warm delightful aroma without chemicals.

To make this, simply combine the following in a small pot or saucepan.

Ingredients
2 cups water
1 orange, sliced
3 cinnamon sticks
1 tablespoon of cloves
2 sprigs of fresh rosemary
5-10 drops of your favourite essential oil (such as vanilla, citrus, or pine)

Instructions

1. Pour the water into a medium saucepan, add in the orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and rosemary sprigs.

2. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Once simmering, reduce the heat to the lowest.

3. Add 10 drops of your chosen essential oil (vanilla, citrus, pine, and so on) and stir for it to blend in.

4. Allow the potpourri to simmer on low for two hours, making sure to keep an eye on the water level. Add more water as needed to maintain about 3/4 full.

5. As the potpourri simmers, the aromas of the oranges, cinnamon, cloves and rosemary will start to fill your home, creating a cozy atmosphere.

6. When you’re ready to enjoy the fragrance, turn off the heat and let the potpourri cool completely. The scent will continue to linger.

1. To reuse the potpourri, simply strain out the solids and store the liquid in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. When ready to use again, just reheat it on the stove. Also, you can store the water in a spray bottle and use it as an air freshener.

2. When you’re done with the potpourri, the fruit, spices and herbs can be composted, while the liquid can be drained down the sink.
