WHY AUGUST 18TH?

August 18th holds symbolic significance, reflecting the startling statistics that 1 in 8 women and 1 in 833 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

Established in May 2021 by the Dr Susan Love Foundation, this day aims to spotlight the importance of ongoing research in the fight against breast cancer. It also  celebrate past and present achievements, and inspire continued efforts to close the knowledge gap surrounding this disease.

THROUGH THE YEARS

Breast cancer research has come a long way, achieving significant milestones that have saved countless lives. Here are some key moments in the history of breast cancer research:

• 3000 B.C.: Ancient Greeks made breast-shaped offerings to Asclepius, the god of medicine, showing early awareness of breast ailments.
• 1882: William Halsted performs the first radical mastectomy, a major advancement in treatment.
• 1898: Marie and Pierre Curie’s discovery of radium leads to its use in cancer treatment, offering new hope for patients.
• 1937: Doctors begin combining radiation therapy with surgery, marking a more sophisticated and effective approach to breast cancer treatment.
• 2013: Scientists define four major subtypes of breast cancer. This allows for more targeted and personalised treatments based on the type of breast cancer a person has.
• 2021: The Dr Susan Love Foundation officially establishes World Breast Cancer Research Day, recognising the importance of research in improving the lives of those affected.
