Embody excellence if you want to be addressed as ‘His Excellency’ – Peter Obi to Nigerian leaders

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged Nigeria’s aspiring leaders to prioritize the welfare of the populace.

Speaking in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, during a meeting with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Obidient Movement on Saturday, Obi emphasized the necessity of compassion and excellence among those seeking leadership roles in the country.

He called for national unity, urging Nigerians to collaborate as one family in the effort to build a new Nigeria. Obi, who previously served as governor of Anambra State, highlighted the need for a shift in the nation’s political focus—from mere consumption to productive growth that utilizes Nigeria’s resources to create wealth and foster prosperity for all citizens.

“Leaders must be competent, compassionate, and committed—prioritizing development, security, education, healthcare, poverty reduction, and opportunities for our youth,” Obi said.

He further asserted that realizing these goals requires a commitment to character and accountability. “Those who aspire to the title of ‘honourable’ must act with honor; those who seek to be called ‘His Excellency’ must exemplify excellence; and those aiming for ‘distinguished’ status must truly lead distinguished lives,” Obi added.

He concluded by stating that these principles should be the benchmark for current and future leaders, as well as a guiding framework for all citizens dedicated to the nation’s advancement.
