Lagos State govt denies allegations of 4.2bn budget for office tables, microphones

Lagos State Government Clarifies Budget Misunderstanding
The Lagos State Government has refuted claims that its 2026 budget allocates ₦4.2 billion for the purchase of furniture and equipment for the Office of the Deputy Governor.
In an official statement, the government attributed the misinformation to a misinterpretation of budget figures. It clarified that the reported amount is not solely designated for office furnishings and microphones.
“The Lagos State Government has noted reports suggesting that ₦4.2 billion was earmarked in the 2026 budget for office furniture and microphones for the Office of the Deputy Governor. This claim is inaccurate and stems from a clear misinterpretation of the approved capital provisions,” the statement read.
The total capital allocation for the Deputy Governor’s office in 2026 is ₦4,247,816,006. However, only ₦170 million of this figure is intended for office equipment and furnishings. The majority, ₦4,077,816,006, is allocated for the reconstruction of the Round House complex, which includes structural repairs, upgrades, and alternative energy installations for the six-story building housing over 50 offices.
The government also made available screenshots of the budget master sheet for public transparency and review. It urged media organizations and the public to seek clarification through appropriate channels to prevent misreporting.
The clarification came in response to an earlier report stating that the 2026 budget contained allocations for office furniture, 10 executive tables and chairs, 40 visitor chairs, and 120 officer desks, as well as 30 microphones for the Deputy Governor’s conference room. The report also alleged that ₦97.5 million had been spent on similar items from January to September 2025.
Despite the government’s denial, the situation has generated ongoing public interest and discussion regarding budget transparency and government expenditure.
