Ogun State Governor Orders Investigation into Ota Toll Gate Accident

Ota, Ogun State — Governor Dapo Abiodun has called for an immediate investigation into the accident at the Ota toll gate that resulted in six fatalities on Tuesday. The incident occurred around 9:32 a.m. and involved several vehicles, including a Mack truck with the registration number EKY 913YH, a yellow Suzuki minibus registered as SMK16YK, and a yellow TVS tricycle with the license plate AAA 840QM.

According to a statement from Salau H.O., the Divisional TRACE Command in Ota, the truck’s driver was reportedly speeding recklessly when he collided with the other vehicles and several pedestrians. Following the crash, the driver fled the scene, while the injured were transported to the State Hospital in Ota. Those presumed deceased were taken to the state morgue in Ifo.

In response to the tragedy, Governor Abiodun condemned the reckless behavior of some truck drivers and emphasized that anyone found guilty following the investigation will face the full consequences of the law. He expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and offered prayers for their strength during this challenging time.

The governor also urged for enhanced vigilance and stricter traffic enforcement measures from the Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In a related development, Lawal Adewale Wasiu, the Executive Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, visited the accident site shortly after the incident. Accompanied by local government officials, he received briefings from security personnel involved in the rescue and control efforts.

Wasiu expressed profound sorrow over the incident and stressed the importance of adhering to traffic regulations. He advised against roadside trading and other hazardous activities that could endanger residents and commuters, assuring that the local council would work closely with relevant agencies to enhance safety compliance in the area.
