Abuja needs mayor, not minister – Aisha Yesufu

Human Rights Activist Calls for Mayor in Abuja
Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has advocated for the appointment of a mayor for Abuja, rather than relying on a ministerial oversight. Yesufu made her remarks in a statement shared on her verified account on X on Friday, just hours before the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.
In her statement, Yesufu emphasized the need for local governance, saying, “Abuja needs a mayor! This nonsense appointment of a minister as the executive head of FCT needs to stop.”
Her comments coincide with a pivotal election in which residents will vote for leaders to oversee six area councils within the capital.
One user on X, identified as @jayeobajaye, responded to Yesufu’s statement, expressing concern over the adoption of a partial governance model, stating, “If we are even copying the American system of government, then we should copy it as a whole and not the partial way that is leading us nowhere.”
The discourse around local governance continues to gain traction as citizens prepare to cast their votes in the upcoming elections.
