ADC disowns ‘illegal’ meeting, vows to resist hijack in Cross River

ADC Denounces Unauthorized Meeting, Asserts Unity in Cross River

By Ike Uchechukwu

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Cross River State has condemned recent efforts by non-members to appropriate the party’s structure, affirming its commitment to unity under the leadership of State Chairman Ambassador Dr. John Oga.

During a press briefing in Calabar, Vice Chairman for the Central Senatorial District, Dr. Mcphalane Ejah, characterized the unauthorized activities as concerning and orchestrated by individuals unrecognized by the party.

Ejah expressed gratitude for the dedication of party members throughout the state and reiterated the ADC’s focus on people-centric development and democratic principles.

“As an opposition party, ADC in Cross River State is committed to development centered on the populace, placing their interests at the forefront,” he stated. “We believe the will of the people should be respected. We reject any form of impunity and imposition and will not tolerate actions that undermine the democratic process.”

The party clarified that it operates without factions and adheres to its constitution, emphasizing that Dr. Oga is the only recognized leader.

Leaders from the ADC dismissed the planned inauguration of a so-called Membership Mobilization, Registration, and Revalidation Committee across the 18 local government areas, deeming it illegitimate and unrecognized by the state executive.

“The state leadership of ADC in Cross River State was not consulted regarding the formation of this committee,” Ejah explained, adding that its composition is unfamiliar. “Even in its alien status, the committee has not approached or recognized the state leadership.”

He suggested that the initiative represents an attempt by certain individuals to seize control of the party for personal gain, urging those behind it to identify themselves publicly.

In an effort to prevent potential unrest, the ADC has notified local law enforcement about an unauthorized meeting scheduled at the Ascot Event Centre in Calabar. A formal letter was sent to the Commissioner of Police, warning that the meeting, convened by unauthorized parties, could lead to disorder.

“ADC abhors violence, and this action was taken to preempt any incidents that could be falsely attributed to us,” Ejah stated, further clarifying that the leadership had not approved the meeting.

He noted that when police approached the meeting’s conveners, they acknowledged the importance of respecting authority but insisted that they could not cancel the gathering due to incurred expenses.

Addressing rumors of involvement from the ruling party in the dispute, Dr. Mcphalane Ejah refuted such claims as unfounded and based in misunderstanding. “The ruling party has no connection to ADC. Our primary concern in notifying the police was to maintain peace and prevent any disruption. Those suggesting otherwise are misinformed,” he said.
