Adekunle Gold reveals the role Pheelz played in getting him signed to YBNL


Adekunle Gold celebrates 10 years since releasing his debut single ‘Sade’.

In December 2014, Adekunle Gold announced himself on the Nigerian music scene with the hit single ‘Sade’.

The song, a cover of British boy band One Direction‘s smash hit ‘Story Of My Life,’ became a viral hit that brought Adekunle Gold mainstream attention and paved the way for his success. 

In a recent interview reflecting on his 10 years in the industry, Adekunle Gold shared the role singer-songwriter, and producer Pheelz played in getting him signed to YBNL by Olamide.

Before getting signed to the label, the singer shared that he had a relationship with Olamide as he worked as a graphics designer for the label and was responsible for some of the cover art of the releases of its artists including Lil Kesh and Viktor.

On how he got signed to the label, AG baby as he’s fondly called shared that Pheelz heard ‘Sade’ and spoke to Olamide to consider signing him, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Under YBNL, Adekunle Gold enjoyed mainstream success with the release of his critically acclaimed debut album ‘Gold’ which had the hit songs ‘Orente’ and ‘Pick Up’.

In his 10-year career so far, Adekunle Gold has emerged as one of Nigeria’s most versatile artists renowned for his stellar penmanship and showmanship.

While he started as a singer offering a captivating urban take on folk and indigenous Yoruba music, the award-winning star would evolve into a pop star with the album ‘Afro-pop Vol 1’.

Adekunle Gold has released 5 albums with several notable chart-topping records that have distinguished him as one of Africa’s most coveted performers.
