After DAILY POST report, Ogun begins ‘special operation’ to evacuate waste

Ogun State Launches Special Waste Management Operation
The Ogun State Government has initiated a “Special Operation” aimed at eliminating a significant backlog of waste across the state, following concerns raised by the DAILY POST.
A report published on February 26 revealed serious issues in waste management, highlighting widespread indiscriminate dumping throughout the region. The report noted that piles of trash were visibly accumulating in various local government areas.
The Private Sector Participants (PSP) responsible for waste collection in residential and commercial areas have faced challenges with consistency in service delivery. Farouk Akintunde, the newly appointed Managing Director of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), stated on Saturday that the special operation was crucial to address the waste build-up that had persisted prior to his appointment.
“The night operation, which had been suspended for several months, has now been reinstated to combat the ongoing waste crisis and improve sanitation,” Akintunde said.
He confirmed that all of the authority’s machinery has been deployed to various locations, particularly in major towns such as Abeokuta, Sango-Ota, Ijebu-Ode, and Ifo. The return of the night operation is expected to expedite waste removal efforts.
In a recent meeting with the Ogun State Association of Waste Managers (AWAN), lingering operational issues were addressed, allowing members to resume work in their designated areas to assist with the waste evacuation process.
As both the Managing Director of OGWAMA and Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Environment, Akintunde encouraged residents to cooperate by properly disposing of their waste in designated containers rather than dumping it on roadways.
He also issued a warning that individuals found littering on road medians would face prosecution.
