Alfred Temile: Advancing Africa’s place in global energy transition

Alfred Temile: A Key Player in Africa’s Energy Transition

By Jeremiah Urowayino

In the context of evolving energy security and sustainable growth, Alfred Temile is emerging as a significant figure in enhancing Africa’s role in the global gas market. As Chief Executive Officer of Temile Development Company, Temile leads one of the few fully indigenous African companies actively engaged in gas shipping—a sector traditionally dominated by multinational corporations.

A critical milestone in the company’s strategy occurred in April 2025, when Temile Development Company entered into an agreement with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries for the construction of two Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs), each with a capacity of 88,000 cubic meters. Once completed, these vessels will rank among the largest Panamax-beam VLGCs globally, highlighting Africa’s growing influence in maritime energy logistics and affirming Nigeria’s role in the gas economy.

This achievement builds on earlier successes, including the launch of the company’s first 23,000-cubic-meter liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier in 2020. This vessel has improved the domestic supply chain for LPG, alleviating distribution bottlenecks within Nigeria. Temile Development Company now operates a fleet that includes LPG/C Alfred Temile and LPG/C Alfred Temile 10, enhancing supply chains and supporting the adoption of natural gas as a transitional fuel.

Temile’s investments have resulted in the creation of over 3,000 jobs across various sectors, including maritime services, upstream assets, logistics, and engineering. He underscores the importance of indigenous participation, viewing it as both a moral and economic necessity. Temile believes that Nigerians should lead in industries that will shape the nation’s future.

In addition to shipping, his company has diversified investments into upstream oil and gas assets, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s productivity. With capital commitments surpassing $1 billion, Temile Development Company is a major player in Nigeria’s gas export sector, aligning with the country’s goals to expand its non-oil export base and enhance foreign-exchange earnings.

What sets Alfred Temile apart is not just his business ventures but his long-term vision. He embodies a new generation of African business leaders—commercially savvy, globally engaged, and focused on national development. His leadership extends to philanthropic efforts through the Okpeyo Temile Foundation, which supports initiatives in education, skills training, and local enterprise development. Temile is committed to ensuring that the prosperity generated by industry positively impacts communities.

Temile’s academic background includes a degree from the University of Ibadan and an MBA from the University of Benin, along with various professional certifications. This educational foundation, combined with his dedication to national progress, informs his approach to developing Nigerian businesses.

As Nigeria and Africa confront the challenges of the energy transition, leaders like Alfred Temile exemplify how indigenous vision, patient capital, and disciplined execution can drive significant change. His focus on long-term value creation is contributing to energy security, enhancing export capacity, and developing local industrial capabilities.

In recognition of his impactful leadership and contributions to Nigeria’s energy sector, Temile has been nominated as Businessman of the Year by the Vanguard Board of Editors for the Vanguard Personality of the Year Award.
