Alleged N117bn misappropriation: Sokoto panel submits report on Tambuwal’s administration

Judicial Inquiry Reports Misappropriation of N117 Billion Under Former Sokoto Governor
A judicial commission of inquiry submitted a report on Tuesday alleging that over N117 billion was misappropriated during the eight-year tenure of former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.
The report was presented to Governor Ahmed Aliyu at the Government House and accused the previous administration of significant financial irregularities, including non-compliance with due process, violations of existing laws, and misuse of authority.
Justice Mu’azu Abdulkadir Pindiga (rtd), the chairman of the commission, noted that the inquiry was initiated by the Sokoto State Government to investigate the previous administration based on verifiable records and sworn testimonies, in accordance with constitutional mandates and public interest.
The commission’s findings indicated alleged financial infractions exceeding N117 billion, primarily stemming from neglect of procurement regulations, inadequate financial controls, and abuse of executive power.
The report is structured into five sections, detailing the inquiry’s background, witness testimonies, findings, recommendations, and a summary aimed at informing government actions.
Justice Pindiga explained that the commission reviewed relevant documents, contracts, and financial records while also gathering testimony from witnesses in ministries, departments, and agencies connected to the previous administration.
He commended the commission members for their professionalism and dedication, emphasizing that the investigation was conducted impartially. He also acknowledged the public and institutional cooperation that contributed to the comprehensive nature of the report, which he described as pivotal for the long-term welfare of Sokoto State.
The report submission aligns with national objectives of promoting democratic accountability, effective management of public funds, and reinforcing public trust in government.
In response, Governor Ahmed Aliyu expressed appreciation for the commission’s members, recognizing their commitment to what he characterized as a critical national assignment. He clarified that the commission’s establishment was not politically motivated but a constitutional obligation aimed at uncovering facts based on evidence.
Governor Aliyu announced plans to form a committee tasked with reviewing the report and preparing a white paper, assuring that the process would be characterized by sincerity and fairness for all parties referenced in the findings.
