AMAA rewards: KSA, P-Square thrill guests

The Africa Movie Academy Award is arguably one of the biggest recognition and appreciation events in the movie industry. The 18th edition of the ceremony held on Sunday, October 20, 2022, in Lekki, Lagos, and it was indeed a night of glitz and glamour dedicated to the celebration of excellence in filmmaking.

The event was hosted by the duo of comedians, Chibunna Stanley, aka Funnybone, and Chioma Omeruah, aka Chigul; and TV show host, Kachi Offia.

The ceremony kicked off with performances by different dance crews and veteran singer, Yinka Davies, who serenaded guests with an Africa-themed set. The winner of Nigerian Idol 2022, Zadok, also serenaded the audience.

Nigeria leads ‘award train’

Nigerian actors and filmmakers led their other African counterparts, winning eight awards in all.

Iya Rainbow honoured

Veteran actress, Idowu Phillips, aka Iya Rainbow, who turned 80 years old recently got a befitting birthday gift as she was honoured with a lifetime achievement award. Obviously pleased with the recognition, Iya Rainbow, who attended the event dressed in her Cherubuim and Seraphim Church white garment, gushed,  “AMAA Awards. You remembered me after my birthday; 80 years and 55 years on stage. I dedicate this award to the Almighty; my creator, my children and my late husband.”

KSA, P-Square dazzle

It was entertainment extraordinaire as two quintessential entertainers from different generations also thrilled guests.

Pop duo, P-Square, who recently got back together after several years of solo careers, were at their entertaining best as they thrilled attendees with some of their hit songs. As if on cue, guests sang along with the music group, even as Peter and Paul Okoye excited them with different dance steps.

Juju legend King Sunny Ade, has been around for decades and he has never been found wanting when it comes to entertaining people. At the AMAA, he reminded guests why he is fittingly called the ‘king of world music’. With his eclectic dance steps, he teased fans to no end with his mastery of stagecraft.
