Amid Multiple Economic Crises, Biden Admin Reviewing ‘Racist Names’ On Federal Lands

Biden’s Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland announced Friday a review of ‘racist’ place names being used on federal lands.

Haaland, according to an announcement on the Department of the Interior website, “formally established a process to review and replace derogatory names of the nation’s geographic features.”

Of particular concern for the Secretary, who is one of the first two Native American women elected to the U.S. Congress, is the term “squaw.”

The term currently appears on more than 650 federal land units. Haaland ordered the creation of procedures to replace all federal use of the term.

“Racist terms have no place in our vernacular or on our federal lands,” she said. “Our nation’s lands and waters should be places to celebrate the outdoors and our shared cultural heritage – not to perpetuate the legacies of oppression.”

“Today’s actions will accelerate an important process to reconcile derogatory place names and mark a significant step in honoring the ancestors who have stewarded our lands since time immemorial,” added Haaland.

Interior Department Focused On Racist Names

While any government entity is free to address multiple issues at any given time, the announcement of an in-depth review of racist names raises some question marks about the priorities of the Biden administration.

Especially considering the skyrocketing gas prices currently hammering the American people.

Earlier this week, gas prices hit a record high of $4.68 for a regular gallon of gas in California. In Michigan, where President Biden traveled earlier this week, drivers are paying an average of $1.30 more per gallon than they were a year ago.

Gas prices overall are at a seven-year high, up 50 percent from one year ago.

Jet fuel prices have also increased 25 percent in just three months.

Forbes Magazine earlier this month addressed the Biden administration’s role in rising gas prices, including the role of the Interior Department.

“From canceling major pipeline projects via executive order to refusing to schedule and hold court-ordered federal lease sales to the implementation of an array of onerous new regulations at the Interior Department and the EPA, this administration been waging war on the U.S. oil industry since literally the day it took office,” they write.

The Biden administration has been all-to-eager to interject themselves into the oil and gas industry through such measures as canceling the Keystone XL pipeline and suspending oil and gas leases in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).

State Department Focused On Pronouns

News that the Interior Department announced a review of racist names in the midst of a gas crisis is reminiscent of another example of misplaced priorities in the Biden administration.

Just last month, the State Department celebrated issuing the first US passport with an “X” gender marker, even as hundreds of Americans were still left behind in Afghanistan.

And prior to that, the State Department marked ‘International Pronouns Day’ with a tweet offering guidance on why people share their pronouns on social media.

The informational post explained that “sharing pronouns (is) a way of getting to know someone” and “avoids accidentally assuming an incorrect gender.”

They discuss the basic level pronoun assignments – ‘he/him/his,’ ‘she/her/hers’ – but also dabble into those who choose non-traditional pronouns such as ‘they/them/theirs.’

The State Department even makes mention of “pioneering” individuals who use “gender-neutral pronouns such as ze/zir/zirs.”

The United States Department of State is focused on pronouns and gender. The Interior Department is focused on racist names. And the American people are suffering for their lack of focus on actual important matters that affect their lives.
