Amnesty International Condemns Deadly Attacks in Maiduguri
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — Amnesty International condemned recent attacks in Maiduguri that resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries, calling the incidents both vicious and unlawful.
In a statement released on its official X account, the rights organization criticized the coordinated assaults attributed to Boko Haram, which it described as showing a blatant disregard for human life. The attacks occurred Monday evening and reportedly claimed the lives of at least 12 individuals, injuring over 50 others.
The assaults began around 6:30 p.m. when suicide bombers detonated explosives at key locations across the city, including the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the Monday Market, and the Post Office area, a bustling part of Maiduguri.
“These deplorable attacks occurred as Muslims were breaking their fast during the holy month of Ramadan, highlighting a complete disregard for human life,” Amnesty stated.
The organization emphasized that the assaults are part of a disturbing trend, noting an increase in Boko Haram’s attacks on civilians since January 2026, which includes assaults on villages and the abduction of women and girls.
Amnesty International called on Boko Haram to cease its targeting of civilians, stating, “Boko Haram must end its campaign of vicious and unlawful killings of civilians.”
The organization also urged Nigerian authorities to implement urgent measures to protect residents. “The Nigerian authorities must act swiftly to ensure all civilians are safeguarded,” the statement concluded.
As the situation develops, Amnesty continues to advocate for greater protections and preventive actions to avert further violence in the region.
