Anambra PDP crisis: Chieftain petitions Wike over ‘congress hijack’

Anambra PDP Dispute: Party Chieftain Alleges Hijack of Congress Process

By Luminous Jannamike, ABUJA

A dispute has emerged within the Anambra State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) concerning the ongoing congress aimed at electing new state leaders. Chief Amaechi Onowu, a party chieftain and chairmanship aspirant, has formally petitioned Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, alleging that the congress process has been compromised.

Onowu’s concerns focus primarily on the sale of congress forms and the participation rights of party members. He contends that certain individuals have manipulated the process, which is intended to ensure fair elections within the party.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Onowu emphasized that the chairmanship position had been designated to the Anambra Central Senatorial District, where he resides.

“I am a registered member of PDP in the Idemili North ward of Anambra State,” he stated. “I want to draw attention to actions taken by some political merchants who have kept PDP in disarray for years.”

Onowu accused unnamed individuals of monopolizing the distribution of congress forms, claiming that they intend to present an unopposed candidate for the state chairmanship, even while serving as the chairman of the caretaker committee.

“They have effectively commandeered the congress process in Anambra State,” Onowu said. “The current chair of the State Caretaker Committee has disenfranchised committed stakeholders and party members from obtaining forms necessary for participation in the congress.”

He noted that these actions violate directives from Wike, who has called for broad participation among registered members in electing the state executive.

“The sales of chairmanship and other forms have been restricted across all 21 local government areas of the state,” Onowu added.

If the situation is not rectified by next week, Onowu has indicated plans to seek legal intervention to ensure that the process remains transparent and accessible to all interested members.
