Another transformer vandal burnt alive in Calabar

Young Man Burned Alive in Calabar After Suspected Vandalism Incident

CALABAR, Nigeria — A young man, whose identity remains unknown, was burned alive on March 10, 2026, following accusations of vandalizing a transformer in the Palm Street area near Target Junction. The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m., reportedly involving members of a local vigilante group.

Witnesses indicate that the mob apprehended the man and set him ablaze prior to the arrival of law enforcement.

Confirming the event, Police Public Relations Officer ASP Eitokpah Sunday stated, “Upon receiving the information, a police patrol team swiftly mobilized to the scene, where the burnt corpse was found located in front of the transformer.”

Authorities recovered several items from the site, including an old-model electricity meter box, a piece of copper wire, and electric cables, which are believed to be linked to the vandalism.

Local government officials and the Environmental Health Services have been contacted to manage the recovery of the body.

The police department reiterated that mob action, often referred to as “jungle justice,” is both illegal and unacceptable. They urged community members to report suspects to law enforcement for appropriate investigation and prosecution, rather than taking matters into their own hands.
