APC recalls ‘retired’ Abdullahi Adamu for 2026 convention c’ttee despite ADC defection rumour

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially commenced preparations for its 2026 National Convention by establishing a 73-member Central Coordination Committee, which notably includes former National Chairman Senator Abdullahi Adamu.
Adamu’s return to the committee is particularly noteworthy given his announcement in 2023, in which he declared his intention to withdraw from partisan politics, citing an “allergy” to political activities. This announcement was further complicated by recent rumors suggesting that he had defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
To address speculation of internal discord, the APC has strategically positioned Adamu at number 32 on the committee list. Last month, the APC’s Nasarawa State chapter issued a statement denying claims regarding Adamu’s defection, asserting that a widely circulated photo of him was taken during the party’s e-membership registration initiative.
The committee will be chaired by Hope Uzodimma, the Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum. He will be supported by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as Vice Chairman, and Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni as Secretary.
The assembly of this committee underscores the significant influence of state governors in shaping the party’s transitional framework in anticipation of the national gathering scheduled for March 2026.
In addition to the controversy surrounding Adamu, the committee exemplifies the APC’s “big tent” approach, blending established party stalwarts with recent additions. Notable members include Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, alongside recent high-profile defectors such as Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, both of whom joined the APC in recent months.
