Ash Wednesday: Find lasting solutions to Nigeria’s problems – CAN urges government

As Christians in Nigeria and around the globe observe Ash Wednesday, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has highlighted the need for leaders and citizens to pause for reflection on the nation’s trajectory.

In a statement released on this significant day, CAN acknowledged the difficulties facing Nigeria, where many families are grappling with rising living costs, uncertain job prospects, and persistent economic pressures.

The association also noted ongoing security challenges across various regions, which continue to affect community confidence.

“These realities call for practical action, responsible leadership, and a shared commitment to finding lasting solutions,” said Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN President. He emphasized the importance of moving beyond mere policy formulation to effective implementation.

“While Nigeria has no shortage of policies, the challenge lies in their equitable and transparent execution to provide genuine relief to citizens,” he added.

Okoh urged leaders to adopt an inclusive approach in their decision-making processes, taking into account the nation’s diverse demographics and ensuring that government initiatives truly benefit households, youth, and communities.

He further encouraged citizens to reject division, violence, and misinformation. “Our diversity across faiths, ethnicities, and cultures is one of Nigeria’s greatest strengths. Continued cooperation among religious communities, along with mutual respect and responsible civic conduct, are essential for maintaining peace and national stability.”

To the youth, Okoh urged, “This period should inspire you to direct your energy towards innovation, productive enterprise, and active participation in public life.”

As Ash Wednesday is observed, he called for a collective commitment to justice, compassion, and responsible citizenship, underscoring that Nigeria’s progress relies on the collaborative efforts of both leaders and citizens.
