ASUU warns Niger Govt against attempt to seize FUTMinna Bosso Campus

Academic Staff Union of Universities Accuses Niger State Government of Attempted Seizure of Campus

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, has accused the Niger State Government of attempting to unlawfully seize the university’s Bosso Campus. The union characterized this action as “desperate and illegal.”

In a statement issued on Monday, Prof. Luqman Kunle Oyewobi, the chairperson of ASUU FUTMinna, emphasized the significance of the Bosso Campus, stating, “It is our academic workspace, research and learning environment, and our home.” He noted that the campus has been a permanent property of the university since 1983, when the Federal Government compensated the Niger State Government for the land.

Prof. Oyewobi warned that any attempt to take control of the campus could severely disrupt teaching, research, student services, and community engagement. He stated, “Claims that the Bosso Campus was leased temporarily are factually incorrect and historically misleading.”

The union has called on the Federal Government, the National Assembly, and the National Universities Commission to intervene and reaffirm federal ownership of all properties associated with FUTMinna.

Additionally, ASUU urged the Niger State Government to adopt a more conciliatory approach, favoring dialogue over unilateral actions. The union reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity, autonomy, and assets of the university and pledged to utilize all legal avenues to maintain federal control over the Bosso Campus.
