Benue crisis: Mend fences, work together – VP Shettima begs Akume, Gov Alia

Vice President Shettima Urges Reconciliation Between Benue Officials

Vice President Kashim Shettima called on Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, to reconcile their differences during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

Shettima emphasized the importance of collaboration between the two leaders for the growth and stability of Benue State. He urged them to set aside their disagreements and focus on the collective interests of the state.

“I want to make a special appeal to His Excellency George Akume and His Excellency Hyacinth Alia to mend fences and work together,” Shettima stated.

Shettima highlighted Akume’s extensive experience in public service, noting that he is one of the longest-serving officials in the current administration, second only to Abdullahi Ganduje. Akume, who is over 70 years old, has held various roles including Director of Protocol, Permanent Secretary, Governor of Benue for eight years, Senator for 12 years, Minister for four years, and currently, Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

“You have seen it all; you are an elder statesman,” Shettima said, encouraging Akume to reach out to Alia. “Benue deserves peace and development. What binds us together supersedes whatever divides us.”

He concluded by mentioning the critical role that Nigeria plays in the context of global growth, asserting that the country’s future could be significantly impacted by the leadership decisions made today.
