Breaking: FG files 3-count charge against ex-Gov El-Rufai

Federal Government Files Charges Against Former Kaduna Governor El-Rufai

The Federal Government has filed a three-count charge against former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, alleging unlawful interception of communications belonging to National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu. The charges were presented to the Federal High Court in Abuja by the Department of State Services (DSS).

El-Rufai, who also served as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, is accused of committing these offenses in collaboration with individuals currently at large.

During a February 3 appearance on Arise TV’s Prime Time program, the former governor reportedly acknowledged his involvement in the alleged activities.

The charges cite a violation of Section 12(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act of 2024.

The second count alleges that El-Rufai was aware of the unlawful interception of the NSA’s communications and failed to notify the appropriate security agencies.

Furthermore, it is alleged that the use of technical equipment to intercept the NSA’s calls endangered public safety and national security, instilling “reasonable apprehension” among the populace, thus breaching Section 131(2) of the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003.

The case has garnered significant attention as El-Rufai is a prominent member of an opposition coalition critical of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
