BREAKING: Lagos Assembly bows to pressure, suspends demolitions in Makoko

Lagos State House of Assembly Halts Planned Demolitions in Makoko

The Lagos State House of Assembly has suspended plans to demolish houses and structures in the Makoko area, following significant public opposition.

Majority Leader Noheem Adams announced the decision in a statement on Tuesday. The suspension comes in response to protests from residents and activists advocating for the preservation of the community.

Earlier reports indicated that various civil society groups and local residents had expressed strong disapproval of the demolitions. Adams stated that the assembly reached this directive after discussions between lawmakers and community representatives.

He emphasized the assembly’s commitment to collaborating with relevant ministries and agencies to reassess the demolition issues. All stakeholders will be actively engaged in the process going forward.

In his statement, Adams said, “On behalf of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, and honourable members, we are taking this matter seriously. All ongoing demolitions should be stopped.”

Further details are expected to follow.
