Violence Erupts During PDP Congresses in Oyo State

OYO STATE, Nigeria – Violence broke out in several areas of Oyo State on Saturday amid local government congresses organized by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to Minister of Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike.

The PDP in Oyo is divided into two factions: one aligned with Governor Seyi Makinde and the other with Wike. The Wike-led faction proceeded with its congresses on Saturday, which escalated into violent confrontations.

Reports indicate that approximately 25 individuals sustained injuries as a result of the clashes. Various properties, including homes and vehicles, were vandalized across several local government areas, notably Ibadan North, Ido, Ibarapa Central, Akinyele, and Ogbomoso North.

Among the damaged properties was the residence of former Governor Barrister Hazim Gbolarumi, located in Bodija, Ibadan North. Sources indicate that the attack resulted in millions of naira in damages.

Professor Abdulrahman Akinoso, chairman of the Wike-led faction in Oyo, confirmed the incidents Saturday afternoon. He stated that armed groups are roaming the communities, instilling fear and causing property damage. “We may need to reassess the extent of the damages. More than 25 vehicles have been reported damaged,” Akinoso said.

Olayinka Ayanlade, Public Relations Officer for the Oyo State Police Command, acknowledged the violence, stating that it is an internal matter for the political party and did not occur at the congress venues. He confirmed the attack on Gbolarumi’s residence and mentioned that the Commissioner of Police has ordered the apprehension of those responsible for the violence. “We are actively addressing the situation,” Ayanlade emphasized.

The events mark a troubling instance of political violence in the region, as authorities work to restore order and ensure safety in the affected areas.
