LAGOS, Nigeria — David Hundeyin, a prominent investigative journalist, asserted on Saturday that the United States has successfully established a military base in Nigeria. His comments followed a statement made by U.S. Congressman Alex Mooney, who represents West Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District.

Mooney had issued a clarification regarding allegations that he was advocating for a covert operation to divide Nigeria amid claims of “Christian genocide” in the country. In his statement, the congressman emphasized his commitment to supporting Christians in Nigeria while announcing a new security cooperation agreement between the U.S. and Nigeria, which he described as a significant step toward addressing the ongoing violence in the region.

Hundeyin responded to Mooney’s remarks on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating that they confirmed his belief that the U.S. had achieved its objectives with the Nigerian government. “The last paragraph is the real point of the five paragraphs of waffle,” he wrote. “They have finally got their long-desired U.S. military base in Nigeria, so job done.”

The discourse arises as Dagvin Anderson, head of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), confirmed the deployment of U.S. troops to Nigeria. In a separate statement, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, clarified that the U.S. personnel in the country are not combatants.

Relations between the U.S. and Nigeria deteriorated after former President Donald Trump designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” in October 2025. In December of the same year, he announced that U.S. military forces conducted a strike on a terrorist hideout in Sokoto, located in Northwest Nigeria. However, recent developments indicate a strengthening of relations between the two nations, characterized by military collaboration and partnership.
