Court jails two for flogging 12-year-old housemaid to death in Lagos
Two Men Sentenced to 15 Years for Death of 12-Year-Old Housemaid
Ikeja, Nigeria — An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court sentenced two men to 15 years each in prison on Thursday for the death of a 12-year-old housemaid they brutally assaulted.
The convicts, Edidiong Edem, 22, a painter, and Alex Effiong-Etim, 21, a mechanic, received their sentences from Justice Abiola Soladoye after entering a plea bargain on an amended charge of involuntary manslaughter.
During the ruling, Justice Soladoye found both men guilty and imposed the custodial sentences, set to begin from the date they were first remanded in custody.
According to court records, Edem and Effiong-Etim flogged the victim with a broom, an act that ultimately led to her death. Initially, the men pleaded not guilty when they were arraigned on February 25, 2022, but later agreed to a plea bargain that resulted in the amendment of their charges.
The court proceedings indicated that the assault took place in January 2022 at Military Estate in the Eleko area of Lagos State. Prosecutor Oluwaseun Adewoye stated that the young girl was subjected to reckless flogging on her legs, which caused injuries that became infected, ultimately resulting in her death.
The prosecution contended that the actions of the convicts were in violation of Section 224 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
