Court Sentences Three to Death for Kidnapping and Murder of Pharmacist
PORT HARCOURT, Rivers State – A Rivers State High Court has sentenced three individuals to death by hanging for their involvement in the kidnapping and murder of a pharmacist, Muenalo Sunday, in Khana Local Government Area.
Justice Augusta Chukwu delivered the sentence on Friday to Confidence Kirinee, also known as General Illa, Precious Mona, and Soniabari Sagha. The court found them guilty of conspiracy, cultism, kidnapping, and murder.
In a separate ruling, Loveday Legah was convicted for being part of a secret cult associated with the crime and received a life sentence.
The judge determined that prosecutors had proven their case against the defendants beyond a reasonable doubt. Evidence presented during the trial indicated that the accused, identified as members of the Iceland cult, were responsible for the victim’s abduction and subsequent killing on March 5, 2019, in the Zaakpo community.
The trial revealed disturbing details, including that the victim’s body was mutilated, with his head and other significant body parts removed before being discarded in a pit. Reports indicated that the severed head was taken to a shrine located in a nearby area.
Justice Chukwu ordered the execution of Kirinee, Mona, and Sagha by hanging until confirmed dead, while Legah was sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the cult activities that led to the crime.
Defense counsel declined to comment on the court’s decision. However, Precious Ordu, Chief State Counsel in the Rivers State Ministry of Justice, expressed approval of the verdict, calling it a thorough delivery of justice.
Pretty Neewa-Sunday, the widow of the deceased, voiced her relief and satisfaction with the judgment, stating it would help bring closure to her family and allow her husband’s soul to rest in peace.
