DHQ reviewing rehabilitation program for repentant insurgents – Onoja

Nigerian Military Reviews Rehabilitation Program for Insurgents
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has initiated a review of its rehabilitation and reintegration program, known as Operation Safe Corridor. This move is part of efforts to enhance Nigeria’s counterinsurgency strategy.
Maj. Gen. Micheal Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, announced the review on Friday during a press briefing about ongoing military operations across the country. He stated that the decision was prompted by emerging challenges and public concerns regarding the Federal Government’s de-radicalization and rehabilitation initiatives.
Operation Safe Corridor was established through a collaboration between the DHQ, the Borno State Government, and relevant federal ministries. The program aims to provide a framework for insurgents who voluntarily surrender to renounce violence and reintegrate into society.
“While the program achieved significant success for a period, it has faced challenges, which we do not deny. A reassessment is necessary to strengthen the program and ensure its effectiveness in addressing current security realities,” Onoja said.
He emphasized that although insurgents would be held accountable for their actions, the opportunity for rehabilitation is a critical component of national security efforts. “We acknowledge public concerns and are committed to conducting a thorough review. Updates on our operational directives for Operation Safe Corridor will be shared in due course,” he added.
Onoja also discussed state-level peace initiatives involving insurgents, emphasizing that governors have a responsibility to protect their jurisdictions while adhering to federal security policies.
“States have the authority to take actions to secure their areas, but this must occur within the framework established by the Office of the National Security Adviser,” he noted.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to implement federal policies and support authorized measures aimed at restoring peace and stability in affected regions.
