Early detection, prevention best ways to tackle cancer – Uzodimma

Imo State First Lady Advocates for Early Cancer Detection on World Cancer Day

OWERRI, Nigeria – Barrister Chioma Uzodimma, the First Lady of Imo State, emphasized the importance of early detection and prevention in combating cancer among women during a public health walk held to commemorate World Cancer Day 2026. This year’s theme, “United by Unique,” highlights the need for collective action in addressing the disease.

Speaking to attendees, Uzodimma described cancer as a critical public health issue and urged for greater investment from the private sector in cancer care initiatives.

“On this World Cancer Day, let us honor every unique journey by strengthening our collective resolve,” she said. “We must promote early detection and prevention, invest in sustainable cancer financing, and support patients and survivors with dignity and care.”

Mr. Adino Kennedy, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, addressed the gathering, stating that cancer should not be viewed solely as a death sentence.

“Cancer is curable, especially when detected early,” Kennedy noted. He encouraged participants to spread awareness in their communities about the causes, diagnosis, and treatment options for cancer.

The event aimed to raise awareness and foster a community response to cancer care in the region.
