Edo 2026 poll: Okpebholo orders political appointees, others aspiring for elective position to resign

Edo State Government has mandated the immediate resignation of all political appointees, public servants, and government officials planning to contest in the upcoming general elections.
Barrister Umar Musa Ikhilor, the Secretary to the State Government, announced this directive during a press briefing in Benin City. The announcement was formalized in a letter dated February 28, 2026.
According to Ikhilor, those affected must submit their resignation letters by March 1, 2026, to be eligible to participate in any party primaries or electoral processes. This directive aligns with the provisions of the Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026.
The Secretary emphasized that the measure aims to prevent disqualification by electoral authorities for aspiring candidates. He underscored the importance of maintaining fairness, transparency, and a level playing field while preserving the integrity and neutrality of public institutions.
Ikhilor noted that current public office holders should not allow their governance responsibilities to be compromised by political activities.
“All affected officers are therefore advised to take immediate and necessary steps to comply with this directive within the stipulated timeline,” he stated.
The administration, led by Senator Monday Okpebholo, is committed to upholding constitutional governance, adhering to the rule of law, and ensuring that due process is observed in all aspects of governance and political participation.
Ikhilor further instructed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to disseminate this announcement widely.
