Edo traditional ruler denies embezzling N250m community funds, EFCC arrest

Okuokpellagbe of Okpella Denies Embezzlement Allegations
BENIN CITY, Nigeria — His Royal Highness Michael Sado, the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella in Edo State’s Etsako East Local Government Area, has refuted allegations of embezzling N250 million in community funds and claims of arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Sado characterized the allegations as the result of a campaign by individuals within the community intent on damaging his reputation and that of the Okpella kingdom. He suggested that these individuals oppose his leadership and the recent reforms aimed at ensuring community funds benefit all residents rather than a select few.
Sado clarified that his visit to the EFCC’s Benin zonal office was in response to an invitation regarding a petition alleging embezzlement. He insisted he was neither arrested nor detained during the visit.
“I was shocked to learn about the reports of my alleged embezzlement and arrest circulating on various social media platforms,” he said. The traditional ruler emphasized that his primary focus remains on advancing the economic and social development of Okpella, vowing to end the prior practices where community funds were mismanaged.
Sado pointed out that Okpella, home to Dangote Cement and BUA Cement, should not be perceived as lacking in development. He accused detractors of wanting to undermine his position as traditional leader and lamented the community’s inadequate infrastructure, highlighting challenges such as poor roads and insufficient healthcare facilities.
In the seven months since his ascension, Sado claims to have initiated numerous projects valued at billions of naira, with ongoing discussions for additional initiatives. He noted the need for a community bank account to facilitate responsible financial management, stating that past practices of distributing community funds among a few individuals must cease.
The Okpella Traditional Council has submitted a petition threatening legal action against those behind the allegations. Dated March 13, 2026, the petition addresses concerns over damage to the community’s reputation, claiming the allegations have caused both physical and psychological harm to its members. The document was signed by senior village heads of the ruling house.
Last week, reports surfaced alleging Sado and a local engineer, Patrick Omkhagbo, were detained by the EFCC following a petition from the Ukhomuyo Council of Village Heads. The council accused Sado of misappropriating community resources for personal gain.
The unfolding situation continues to attract public attention as members of the Okpella community and other concerned stakeholders await further developments.
