EFCC seeks stronger collaboration with Taraba judiciary to curb financial crimes

EFCC Stresses Importance of Collaboration with Taraba Judiciary in Tackling Financial Crimes

JALINGO, Nigeria — The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has underscored the significance of enhancing collaboration with the Taraba State Judiciary as a key strategy to combat financial crimes in the region.

Effa Okim, the acting Zonal Director of the EFCC’s Makurdi Directorate, made the comments during a courtesy visit to Chief Judge Justice Joel Agya on Thursday. Okim, who serves as an Assistant Commander within the commission, emphasized the need for a strong partnership between the EFCC and the judiciary to effectively address corruption and regain public trust in governance.

“We commend the Taraba State Judiciary for its ongoing support in the fight against financial crimes,” Okim said, noting that sustained cooperation is crucial for achieving significant progress.

He expressed concern over the diversion of public funds for personal and political gain, which he said undermines access to resources meant for national development. “We must collaborate to remove criminals from our midst. Our collective interest transcends individual agendas; it is about the integrity of our nation. We must take a stand against corruption, even if that entails sending offenders to prison,” he stated.

In response, Justice Agya remarked on the pivotal role of the EFCC within Nigeria’s framework of law enforcement and accountability. According to Agya, the judiciary, particularly at the state level, is essential in upholding the rule of law, delivering justice, and preserving the integrity of public institutions.

“The Taraba State Judiciary recognizes its vital role as a stakeholder in the fight against economic and financial crimes,” Agya said. He added that the success of any anti-corruption strategy relies heavily on the collaboration between investigative agencies such as the EFCC and the courts that adjudicate related cases.

The meeting also served as an opportunity to enhance existing cooperation, revisit areas of mutual interest, and reinforce the commitment to transparency and accountability. Agya assured the EFCC of the judiciary’s ongoing support and pledged to maintain collaboration through capacity-building initiatives, information sharing, and strict adherence to due process.

He expressed optimism that improved institutional relationships between the EFCC and the judiciary would advance justice in Taraba State and throughout Nigeria.
